Am I grammatically correct?

sofatutor magazine student

There are words and phrases that you really should never say. We have listed 8 of them for you.

"Even"

The word "ebend" is particularly common in Mecklenburg, Brandenburg and Berlin, as it is a dialect form. The word does not exist in the standard language. That's the way it is!

"I don't go swimming because of the rain!"

Yes, a lot of people say "because of that". It is still not correct. The preposition "because of" comes with the genitive. So it says correctly: “I don't go swimming because of the rain.” But because so many say “because of the” (dative), the Duden allows this construction in colloquial language. But it is not beautiful!

With fun to learning success - that's how it's done

"I'm sad because of you!"

The same applies to “because of me”, “because of you”, “because of him” etc. You hear that too often - in everyday language. But grammatically, "because of you" is wrong. As described above, the preposition "because of" requires the genitive. The word “dir”, on the other hand, is a dative. Correctly it has to read "for your sake", "for my sake", "for his sake / for your sake", etc. ", so" because of you I am sad! "

"I'm as tall as you!"

When you hear the phrase “I'm as tall as you”, all alarm bells should go off. The as-how combination has a lot of fans, but it's wrong - very wrong. It's the same with "I'm bigger than you". If inequality is discussed in a sentence, “as” is used, ie “Klaus is bigger than Tim”. The word “how” expresses an equality, e.g. B. "Tina is just as old as Dominik". You shouldn't use the combination of “as” and “how” at all.

"Only one"

Since the adjective “unique” cannot be increased (one cannot be more than unique), the word “unique” does not exist. So it always means “the only one”, “the only one”, “the only one”.

"That makes sense!"

It is a trend to use the incorrect sentence “That makes sense” instead of “That makes sense”. Even if this sentence has already been included in the Duden, it contains a translation error. The English sentence “That makes sense” became “That makes sense” in German. The German word “make” comes from the Indo-European “mag”, which means “to form”. But the problem is: either something makes sense or it doesn't. The meaning can be recognized and seen, sought and found. But meaning cannot be formed and therefore also cannot be made. So the phrase “that makes sense” doesn't make sense.

"I am learning!"

Instead of “I'm learning”, some say “I'm learning”. Since such sentences are particularly common in the Rhenish language and other West German dialects, they are called the Rhenish or Westphalian progressive form. The sentences “I'm studying” or “He's baking” are not entirely wrong, but they're not beautiful either, are they? Why don't we just use the verbs? The sentences “I'm learning”, “He's baking” and “She sings” sound much nicer!

"Take that!", "Eat that!"

For many, the wrongly used imperative (command form) such as “take that” or “eat that” is cold. Because it really has to be “take that!” And “eat that!”.
