Can dogs eat grapes? Easily explained

Grapes are healthy and taste good, not only to us, but also to many animals, such as dogs. In this home tip, we clarify whether the fruit is just as beneficial for pets as it is for us.

Are grapes poisonous to dogs?

Many foods that are generally completely harmless to us can cause great damage to the health of dogs. This also applies to foods that are generally considered to be very healthy, such as various types of fruit.
  • Foods that are good for our health, such as onions, avocado or garlic, can have the opposite effect on pets and, in the worst case, even lead to death. This also applies to chocolate, by the way.
  • How bad the effects are, of course, depends on the particular pet and the amount of food.
  • In addition to the foods already mentioned above, exactly the same applies to numerous other foods, including grapes and raisins.
  • If dogs eat grapes, this can lead to severe poisoning, which is accompanied by unpleasant side effects such as stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. With raisins, the negative effect on the animals is even worse. The substances poisonous for the dogs are contained in the dried grapes in a much more concentrated form.
  • In the worst case, the dog can even die for a very short time from sudden kidney failure after it has eaten grapes or raisins. If in doubt, you should therefore visit the veterinarian immediately.
  • It is best not to give your dog even the smallest amount of the respective food. Once the dog has got used to the taste, he will try to get hold of grapes or other foods that are not intended for him. If no one is home at that moment, it may be too late for medical help a few hours later.
You should definitely not feed your four-legged friend with grapes. You can find out whether a dog is allowed to eat bananas in the next article.
