InMotion Hosting Review

With nearly 20 years in the web hosting business, InMotion Hosting is one of the most recognizable names.

A lot - I mean, a lot of classic cars have hosted their website with InMotion in the past. A review of InMotion is therefore a challenge. I need to make sure my review covers enough depth and gives a clear picture of what it's like to be an InMotion Hosting customer.

My experience with InMotion hosting

InMotion Hosting is a service provider that has been close to my heart for some time. I first started using InMotion when I was offered a free shared hosting account in 2009. The free shared hosting account expired a year later. I loved their service so much that I stayed as a paying customer.

Today, a decade later, I am using the InMotion VPS hosting plan, paying the company hundreds of dollars every year to host my important websites.

I'm sure I've gotten around to almost all facets of their resources at some point over the years.

I have exhausted my shared hosting resources and caused my account to be locked out twice in the past. I've spoken to their support team countless times - on the phone and through their live chat system.

What's in this InMotion test?

In this review, I'll be sharing that I've learned something about InMotion over the years so you can make an informed decision about the pros and cons of hosting them with them.

WHSR reviews are based in part on performance tracking on websites that we set up on each host - this includes (of course) InMotion Hosting. And because I still use InMotion to host my websites today, I can take you behind the scenes and show you their features through my account.

I'll also post an exclusive offer at the bottom of this page - where you can get InMotion at 66% off. Shared hosting starts at $ 2.49 / month instead of the regular $ 7.49 / month.

Advantages and disadvantages of InMotion hosting

What we like and don't like about InMotion hosting -

Benefits of InMotion Hosting

1. Excellent hosting performance: Uptime> 99.95%, TTFB ~ 400 ms

Among the web hosting service providers I've met so far, InMotion hosting servers are among the most powerful in the budget category. Their availability is well above the industry standard of 99.95%.

More importantly, I've tested the performance of several locations, all of which can have Time to First Byte (TTFB) below 450ms.

The proof, however, is in the pudding, as they say. Let's take a look at the test results I've collected on InMotion Hosting over the years since 2013.

2. Excellent customer care and live chat support

InMotion Hosting's standard support process includes:

  • Non-parallel 90-day money-back guarantee
  • Multiple support channels (ticket system, Skype, telephone, live chat, emails)
  • Easy refund or account closure

InMotion Hosting Inc. is known for customer service and has been BBB accredited since 2003. The company has an A + with BBB Busines Review. It is often rated highly by hosting review sites, so it also has high expectations that it needs to meet, especially in after-sales service.

When I ran an undercover test of customer support channels in August 2017, their live chat came out as one of the best in the field. The first response time was less than 60 seconds and my inquiries were answered quickly.

My personal experience with InMotion's live chat support

I repeated a test with the InMotion support system in 2018 to update this test and I am glad it did not deteriorate at all.

Other user comments

Of course, I'm not alone in my love for InMotion - others think they're great too, especially when it comes to customer support.

As usual, InMotion Hosting offers a full range of shared package types for multiple scenarios. From the simplest entry-level pages to heavy e-commerce users, there is something for everyone.

Some important features include:

  • Choice of server locations between the US east and west coasts,
  • Automated daily site backup and restore
  • eCommerce ready - OpenCart, PrestaShop & Magento pre-installed,
  • Unlimited Email Accounts - Access your inbox via webmail, IMAP, POP
  • Free SSL certificates ready (Auto SSL),
  • Managed WordPress hosting with integrated WP Site Builder (BoldGrid),
  • PHP 7 ready - loads your websites 50% faster,
  • Pre-configured CMS during the order,
  • Professional web design service at a reasonable price,
  • Softaculous - Install ~ 400 web apps with just a few clicks.
  • SSH and SFTP access,
  • Unlimited cron jobs for all hosting plans and
  • WP-CLI Enabled - Install and manage WordPress with multiple locations

Free SSL (the standard in cPanel)

There's obviously a difference between free and paid SSL, but for most of us, the free version is fine. Look for the option in your WHM to enable your free SSL (VPS or dedicated hosting users).

Unfortunately, InMotion Hosting does not support the automatic installation of Let's Encrypt SSL certificates (unlike Siteground or A2 Hosting). You get root access and you have to install it yourself. You can find the detailed instructions in this tutorial.

Managed WordPress hosting

The WordPress platform managed by InMotion includes free CDN, Jetpack Personal / Professional and the integrated WP site builder BoldGrid.

Host and send your emails from InMotion Hosting

* Note: Old prices are displayed in the .GIF image. InMotion Hosting increased the price of the Power Plan to $ 7.99 / month in July to 2020.

No hard limit for inodes on business hosting plan

Note that InMotion Hosting does not have a fixed limit on the number of inodes.

While most of the others (in a similar price range) limit 100,000 - 250,000 inodes per account.

Web design service at a reasonable price

Business Time Saver: With InMotion (during checkout) you can design and build a one-page website for $ 99 in 2 days.

5. Lots of room to grow

Whenever you run a website, keep in mind that there is room for extensions. You could be getting 50 hits a day today, but in a year or two that could possibly exceed 1,000 or so daily, maybe even more.

Fortunately, InMotion Hosting has a very wide range of plans that you can gradually upgrade to as you grow. There is also an option to switch to VPS or dedicated hosting plans if you feel the shared plans are still too restrictive for you.

Be confused? Which InMotion hosting are you planning for this?

Facing too many decisions can sometimes be a headache. If you're not sure what you need, here is my 2 cents;

Decide whether you prefer shared, VPS or dedicated server hosting.

For those who need server root access or special needs like custom software, you might want to consider VPS hosting to start with.

For everyone else, it's likely that one of the shared plans will be fine with you (it's common for you to buy from the lowest tier first).

InMotion has four different levels of business class hosting: Lite, Launch, Power and Pro.

Each higher level, while similar in nature, offers more features, such as: B. more addon domains, parked domains or something else. The most important thing is how many websites each plan supports. If you only need to run a single website, just go for Lite, the lowest package.

Remember that these packages can be updated at any time. All you have to do is fill in the price difference.

6. 90 day money back guarantee

Some web hosts may try to get away with no money back guarantee or limit you to a ridiculous 3 day or 14 day period. InMotion Hosting offers one of the longest trial periods in the business - 90 days a feast for the eyes!

At any time within those 90 days, if you are dissatisfied with what you purchased, you can request an account lockout for a full refund.

All 6 Monthly and Longer Term Hosting Plans for our Business, VPS and Reseller Hosting Plans are covered by our unmatched 90% money back guarantee. All dedicated servers and all VPS and reseller hosting plans billed monthly are given a full refund for 30 days.

Disadvantages of InMotion hosting

While InMotion is one of the few to get a full five-star rating from me, I still have to admit that nothing is perfect.

Let me share some of the not-so-encouraging points about them.

1. After the first registration, the prices increase

If you are currently signing up for InMotion Hosting, then this is what is known as the honeymoon period. You pay lower fees and both you and the host are happy. Unfortunately, this only lasts for the duration of your first contract. When it is time to renew, you will be charged the full fee.

This means that for a 36 month renewal period, you will have to pay $ 7.49 / $ 9.99 / $ 13.99 / $ 22.99 per month, depending on the plan.

The even sadder news is that it's not all about InMotion Hosting and it's actually an industry standard. The practice has had many complaints over the years.

If this is something you REALLY object to, go to a host that doesn't practice it, such as Interserver.

2. No instant account activation

To prevent fraud, InMotion does not perform instant account activation. That means you will need to be confirmed by phone before activating your account - a slight inconvenience for those living outside of the US like me.

I'm in Malaysia, on the other side of the world from the USA. With time gaps and poor call quality, it can be a real mess at times.

3. Server location in the US only

InMotion Hosting users are only allowed to host their websites in the United States. You can choose between Los Angeles (West) and Washington DC (East) when you order your plan - but that's it. For advanced users, you'll need a content delivery network (CDN) or partner with other hosting companies (for example, Hostinger supports 8 server locations in the US, EU, and Asia).

InMotion hosting alternatives and comparison

We've talked a lot about InMotion Hosting so far, but for those of you who are still unfazed, there aren't any - there are other options. BlueHost, SiteGround, and A2 Hosting are three popular alternatives. Personally, I would also recommend A2 Hosting and SiteGround. Both are great dogs in web hosting as well, who offer comprehensive plans at competitive prices.

Alternatives # 1: SiteGround

Siteground was founded in 2004 and has offices in Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and the USA.

Both InMotion Hosting and SiteGround enjoy solid reputations for their excellent server performance and customer support. InMotion Hosting is cheaper and comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee. However, SiteGround has better features, including a built-in cache. NGINX the latter also has a better distribution of server locations, i.e. USA, Europe and Asia.

Alternatives # 2: A2 hosting

A2 Hosting has been around since 2001. When it first hit the scene, it became known as Iniquinet. It was then renamed A2 Hosting in 2003 in tribute to the founder's hometown - Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The company has data centers in three locations with the primary data center in Michigan and additional servers in Amsterdam and Singapore, Asia.

Alternative # 3: BlueHost

Another popular web hosting company is BlueHost. They are often compared to InMotion Hosting, although our research found InMotion Hosting to be better in terms of server performance and live chat support. However, BlueHost is around 15% cheaper than InMotion Hosting in the long run.
