How is 000webhost web hosting services

000webhost review

Founded in 000 as a subsidiary of Hostinger, Webhost is a little different from your regular web hosting provider, even the free ones. Instead, it describes itself as a "learning platform for beginners who start their journey on the Internet".

Offering a range of low cost web hosting solutions with an absolutely free starter plan, 000webhost allows users to take an easy step towards building and hosting their first website. This means that these low-cost plans work in tandem with two other important components that are useful for beginners - website builders and code learning.

How Free Web Hosting Works

Before I dive into 000webhost, I thought it wise to add a quick chapter on free web hosting. Any type of web hosting, free or otherwise, requires the same equipment from the web hosting provider.

The first thing to note is that servers, software, and bandwidth require significant investments. These investments need to be restored in some way so you can usually face the pressure to upgrade your account. In some cases, the free web host can also share your details with partners.

On another level, there are many restrictions on free accounts. These vary by host - some enforce mandatory ads on your website, strict limits on server resources. In addition, you can only use certain formats of the domain name. In the case of 000webhost this would be:

Finally, there are the risks you face if the free host tries to reduce security because of the upfront cost. As an example, 000webhost was hacked in 2015 which resulted in data stolen from over 13 million customers.

Because of these factors, I highly recommend that you think of 000webhost as a sandbox where you can try new things or ideas. If you're serious about hosting a website, consider using a paid hosting service instead.

Tip: Hostinger's lowest shared hosting plan is only $ 0.80 / month - works great for users looking for a more serious alternative to 000webhost.

Benefits of 000webhost

1. Simple login with 1-click registration

Signing up for 000webhost is a surprisingly quick and painless experience. The common format is that you have to go through a registration process where you have to fill in a ton of details and give them all possible information. then Confirm your e-mail address.

With 000webhost, you can either take the above actions or use 1-click registration to log into your Google or Facebook account. I tried signing in to google and it was quick, painless, and worked flawlessly.

2. Guided construction site

The first thing that happens when you log into a newly created account is that the 000webhost system asks you a series of questions. I've seen this with other site builders like Shopify and it helps, especially in the case of 000webhost.

As I mentioned in my introduction, 000webhost is for people who are new to website building and this can be of great help. Rather than forcing them to consider technical details about a build, 000webhost helps come up with a series of thought sequences that are intended to guide the build.

3. Four site creation options

For those not brand new to the website building process, you can skip the guided questions and jump to the main dashboard. This gives you 4 options: to use the native 000webhost site builder, install WordPress, use Wix, or upload your own site.

If you choose to use Wix, you will actually be removed from the 000webhost environment and you will be directed to the Wix site instead (read my Wix review instead). Since I didn't have the ready-made shell of a site, I decided to try their WordPress and native site builder options.

Choosing WordPress will allow you to create a simple WordPress site using their automated tool. All you have to do is enter your desired username and password for the database. If you choose to use the native site builder, it works like many others.

4. Easy to use native site builder

Using the native site builder is relatively painless and is a typical visual editor experience. I loved that there were some handy drag and drop tools like Google Maps and YouTube. Interestingly, for a free service, there are also some ecommerce tools that you can use.

5. Lots of free templates

The only thing I have to agree with is that 000webhost prepared a ton of free templates for their native site builder. This is probably a good thing as new website owners are unlikely to know exactly what they want or need, and these templates serve as a good guide for them.

6. Decent website performance

I've personally had little experience with free hosting services, but nonetheless, I ran a basic template site through my standard WebPageSpeed test.

The results were a little surprising, especially since they do very well on time-to-first-byte (TTFB).

According to the tracking I did on HostScore, 000webhost is over 70.00% for total server performance. The average response speed is 281.54ms from 10 different locations.

If Bangalore and Singapore were excluded from the table above, the response speed for the rest of the locations is under 230ms, which is considered good especially if you can host them for free. You can see the full 000webhost server performance at HostScore.

7. Multiple channels of support

Support is mainly offered through a knowledge database. However, there is an extensive community forum that you can reach out to. Interestingly, there is also a discord channel you can join, which I rarely see for web hosting support.

8. At a glance dashboard for website statistics

I also didn't expect the dashboard for my website from a free service. It provides a one-page view of your website stats, including the amount of resources it has used (or is currently using). The information is very simple, but what do you not expect in principle at all?

9. Integration of locations and services

I was a little hesitant about including this section here initially, but 000webhost has a section called the Power Store. At first I thought these were somehow built-in services that users could access.

Unfortunately, these are more of a suggestion of what kind of tools would be useful for budding website owners. There is limited intake right now, such as links to Wix, Shopify, Elementor, and of course Hostinger.

If you think about it, this segment could also be useful for newbies to web hosting, giving them new areas to explore once they get used to their basic websites. A little more clarity for 000webhost users would have been good, however.

Disadvantages of 000webhost

1. Unstable builder

While I mentioned several ways to build websites with 000webhost in my pro section, unfortunately some of them failed to deliver. For example, the WordPress installer could not run (twice) even though conflicting messages were given. Success and error messages are displayed.

Nevertheless, a database was created. If you keep trying to run the WordPress installer, the system will tell you that there are too many databases. This can be extremely confusing for anyone new to web hosting.

2. The native site builder seems a little unpolished

The native site builder works fine, but it seems a bit unpolished and the UI showed some graphics glitches in my Chrome browser. Templates take a long time to load. For some reason my screen seems to flicker when the builder loads. Small issues that don't necessarily break the Site Builder - just weird and awkward.

3. Forced 1hr daily downtime

Now if you're wondering what's the catch for all of the free stuff that 000webhost offers, then here's the big problem - for every 24 hour cycle, you have to put up with the fact that your website is down for 1 hour. You can choose when that period is, but it will necessarily be cut off from the world for that period.

From their own FAQs;

“Every website hosted on a free 000webhost platform now gets 1 hour of sleep a day. Your website is closed to the public, but you can set the sleep time yourself. "

4. Constant pop-ups

The bills have to be paid somehow and besides the free plan, 000webhost also offers some very affordable shared hosting plans you can upgrade to. Unfortunately, it's annoying that patch advices everywhere encourage you to upgrade. If that's not enough, you'll also need to create pop-up ads of them asking you to upgrade as well. It's getting old fast.

000webhost plans and pricing

000webhost doesn't have the comprehensive plans most have as it should be an offshoot of Hostinger web hosting service providers would offer. There are no managed plans, no dedicated servers, no VPS or anything like that. All that is available is shared hosting.

Pricing starts with the base price, which is free, and then builds on two plans - Single and Premium, which cost $ 1.45 / month and $ 2.95 / month, respectively.

Hostinger - Same features, cheaper price

As I mentioned earlier, 000webhost is actually owned by Hostinger, and if you are reading this, it is that we have a special offer at Hostinger. When you register with us, you can get the same benefits on Hostinger as the 000webhost Single Plan - and at a lower price!

Since hosting actually manages 000webhost plans, I strongly recommend that you consider this offer instead of going with 000webhost.

1. Can I recommend 000webhost?

For the price of a 000webhost account, I have to say the features on offer are impressive. There are automated tools, free templates, and an easy-to-use site builder, all of which are packed into one neat package - even if some parts are slightly damaged. All for a great buy-in price of $ 0 - not bad.

2. Who should host at 000webhost?

IF you've never built a website before and have no idea what you're doing then 000webhost can be a good sandbox for you. That being said, if you intend to run some basic websites it won't probably get a lot of traffic, that will be fine too.

If you expect to be okay with this in the long run and want to build a better website, I highly recommend going to your parent, Hostinger. That would give you better long-term prospects, and they have some decent shared hosting rates too. Here is the Hostinger test.
