How effective is homeopathic cancer treatment

Against cancer, of course

Dietrich Beyersdorff

Biological, holistic, alternative, complementary - whatever you like to call it - more and more cancer patients are relying on complementary therapies to medicine. Conventional treatment methods can be effectively supplemented with mistletoe therapy, overheating or high-dose radical scavengers.

The diagnosis of cancer comes as a shock to anyone. Most of those affected do extensive research about their illness in order to take advantage of all opportunities and do as much as possible for their recovery. Many turn to complementary therapies. The aim of these complementary treatments is to activate the self-healing powers. To do this, the immune system must be mobilized against the malignant cells. It is also very important to motivate the patient to take part in the recovery themselves. The means and methods of complementary medicine should and cannot replace clinical efforts. But you can support them and increase their effectiveness.

Most cancer patients ask themselves the question after the diagnosis: What do I have to change in my life, what do I have to do so that the cancer goes away and does not come back? If you ask "successful" patients who were able to fight their disease despite a poor prognosis, most of them first changed their diet. Findings from epidemiological studies show that plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grain products, and little meat and fat effectively strengthen the immune system. In addition, natural foods provide numerous bioactive substances, especially the secondary plant substances, which can interfere with the development of cancer in various places.

Free radicals can promote cancer

Normally, the need for protective bioactive substances and trace elements can be covered by a wholesome diet. However, new studies suggest increasing daily intake for some of these substances. Research on free radicals in particular makes this seem advisable. Free radicals are mostly unsaturated, unstable oxygen compounds or fragments thereof that are missing an electron. In order to become stable again, they try to grab the missing particle from other molecules. In doing so, they break open cell envelopes, damage tissue and mucous membranes and disrupt vital processes in the cells. Errors occur in the production of protein building blocks, enzymes and hormones; signal transmission to neighboring cells is impaired. If genes are directly affected, the information content of the genetic material changes. It creates a mutation that may cause cancer and can be inherited.

High doses prevent it

Free radicals are formed during all metabolic processes, during digestion, when eating or breathing, through pollutants or radiation. Humans have developed certain protective systems to intercept these aggressive particles. However, due to the modern way of life with its many burdens such as stress, smoking or environmental pollutants, free radicals are often generated in such quantities that the body can no longer cope with them without support. The most effective radical scavengers include numerous secondary plant substances, the trace element selenium and vitamins C, E and beta-carotene.

In order to prevent cancer, biologically oriented cancer doctors therefore recommend the additional intake of radical scavengers. The recommended dosages go well beyond the recommendations of the German Nutrition Society. In the case of selenium, they consider a daily intake of 100 to 150 g necessary, the usual recommendation is 30-70 g. For vitamin C, at least 150 mg (otherwise 100) and for vitamin E 30-60 mg (otherwise 12-15) are recommended. The incidence of diseases of the lungs, breasts, stomach, intestines and prostate could be reduced in various studies by this measure by up to 50 percent. Carotenes have fallen into the shadows since some studies came to the (controversial) conclusion that beta-carotene may promote dormant lung cancer in smokers. However, this only seems to apply to isolated beta-carotene.

If cancer is already present, the organism is flooded with free radicals during chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It is they who trigger many of the agonizing side effects such as inflammation of the mucous membranes or even permanent organ damage. Taking selenium, vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene can reduce these side effects. High doses have to be used - up to one gram of vitamin C, 400 mg of vitamin E and 30 mg of beta-carotene. Holistic cancer doctors even recommend 500 to 1000? G of selenium for the day of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, to be taken or injected one hour before treatment in the form of sodium selenite. Selenium researchers recommend an intake of 200 to 300 micrograms on treatment-free days. In the USA, this has significantly reduced the mortality of patients with skin cancer.

Plant substances repair the cells

Secondary plant substances open up completely new possibilities for biological treatment. It is certain that they not only prevent the development of cancer, but that they can also reverse the onset of cell degeneration (precancerous lesions). (see picture below). New studies show that at least some of these substances also have therapeutic benefits. In the case of hormone-dependent breast or prostate tumors, phytohormones from soy, grain or red clover can effectively support the clinical treatment. The plant hormones are also available in different concentrations in the form of nutritional supplements or medicines.

Secondary plant substances intervene in the cancer process at various points (see arrows). They can inhibit carcinogens and reverse harmful cell changes. Together with other therapies, they can also inhibit cancer growth.

Research with so-called angionesis inhibitors is still new. Every tumor needs a connection to the blood system by the time it reaches the size of a lens, otherwise it would die. In the early stages, signals emanate from the tumor cells, which trigger an impulse to form a connecting artery in the nearby blood vessels. Some of the phytochemicals seem to be able to disrupt or block this signal chain between tumor cells and blood vessels. Among other things, the genestein from the soybean is being clinically tested. Another potentially protective substance is epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) from green tea. EGCH blocks an enzyme that tumor cells need to be able to penetrate healthy tissue. The substance belongs to the group of catechins, which are a subgroup of flavonoids. These phytochemicals are not only found in green tea, but also in the peel of most vegetables and fruits.

Known for a long time: mistletoe therapy

Cytostatics are drugs that inhibit nucleus division and cell reproduction. They play an important role in the medical treatment of cancer patients. The drugs not only damage cancer cells, but also healthy body cells that often divide. This includes mucous membranes, hair roots and especially the bone marrow. The immune system is weakened and the blood count is damaged.

In order to reduce the side effects of these drugs or radiation therapy, naturopaths advise giving mistletoe preparations or thymus injections during the entire treatment period. Sugar-containing protein substances in mistletoe, so-called lectins, have been shown to stimulate the immune system. They also promote the release of endorphins in the brain, which have a pain-relieving and mentally brightening effect. The doctor can prescribe mistletoe preparations; they are usually reimbursed by the health insurance companies without any problems.

The thymus gland shapes and controls our immune system. In it, certain white blood cells, the lymphocytes, are formed into killer cells, memory cells, helper cells, suppressor cells and other immune cells. In aging people, the gland largely ceases to function and the immune system becomes weaker. Substances that are isolated from the functioning thymus glands of young calves are supposed to give the weakened immune system new impulses. More than 30 compounds produced by the gland, mostly hormones and peptides, are known to date. In numerous studies, thymus injections have been shown to increase the number of active defense cells, extend relapse-free times and improve overall quality of life. Extracts or lysates from the spleen, liver or connective tissue should also counteract nausea and vomiting. Only a few health insurance companies cover the costs of thymus preparations. Patients should therefore clarify the payment in advance.

Mitigate side effects

To support mistletoe or thymus therapy, many therapists treat their patients with oxygen. A lack of exercise, bed restraint, stress, operations, radiation and chemotherapy caused by the disease reduce the oxygen uptake of tissues and cells. According to the proponents of the therapy, this also affects the performance of the immune system. The aim is to compensate for a possible oxygen deficit. The effectiveness of oxygen therapy has hardly been scientifically investigated so far. However, good experiences speak in favor of the method. A study by the University Radiation Clinic in Düsseldorf shows that supplementary oxygen therapy can improve the results of radiation and chemotherapy and at the same time protect healthy tissue. The tiredness with severe states of exhaustion, complained of by many patients, also occurs less frequently and mildly. The holistic follow-up treatment of chemotherapy or radiation therapy also includes measures that regenerate the intestinal flora and detoxify and strengthen the liver.

Use heat to tackle the tumor

Advances in cancer treatment can be expected from two further approaches from empirical medicine: hyperthermia (overheating) and tumor vaccination. Both methods have meanwhile found their way into medical cancer therapy. It has long been known that tumor cells are particularly sensitive to heat. For around ten years there have been devices with which the necessary temperatures can be reached even in deep regions of the body. The overheating is caused by micro- or radio waves as well as by infrared emitters from the outside. Heat treatment doubles the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation in many cases. The immune system can also attack the heat-damaged cells better.

Tumor vaccination is used to prevent or combat the formation of metastases. Metastases are smaller cells or cell clusters that detach from the primary tumor and distribute them through the blood and lymphatic vessels in the body. They can settle anywhere and also grow into a tumor. With so-called active-specific immunotherapy (ASI), dendritic cells, which are part of the immune system, are loaded with cancer cells from the patient and injected back into the patient. The cells prepared in this way present the antigens of the cancer cells to the immune cells: This is what the enemy looks like. This enables the immune system to better recognize and attack the harmful cancer cells. Initial studies showed that tumors regressed completely under this therapy, even in patients for whom other treatments had no effect.

Take care of the psyche

It is very important and helpful to stabilize cancer patients psychologically. Fear only makes things worse. Discussions in therapy or self-help groups are suitable. Other offers can also be used - such as meditations of various kinds, breathing exercises or relaxation techniques. In the visualizations according to Dr. Simonton looks inward and the patient sends his immune cells mentally to fight the tumor. Sport and exercise also help reduce the frequency of relapses.

Doctors and patients are increasingly thinking that progress in cancer treatment can only be achieved if conventional and biological therapies are combined to form an integrative cancer treatment. But the patient must also be taken more important than before. He should be turned from being passively affected into being actively involved in the treatment.

Helpful point of contact

The Society for Biological Cancer Defense advises patients and relatives in detail and independently about the possibilities of biological therapies. A medical advice service answers all questions free of charge, names doctors, therapists, clinics and self-help groups in the desired area and sends out a directory of day clinics and hospitals with holistic medical cancer treatment. The company also supports all efforts to have the health insurance companies reimburse the costs of biological remedies and promotes studies that investigate the use and dissemination of supportive therapeutic measures in cancer.
