How can I kill myself

On site "I want to kill myself": Hannah from Freiburg helps with suicidal thoughts

Hannah opens her laptop and starts typing. The 22-year-old student is currently one of 28 volunteers in Freiburg who email their peers through life crises. "[U25]" is the name of the mail counseling service. It is supported by the Freiburg "Arbeitskreis Leben e.V." and the German Caritas Association and has been online since 2001.

Hannah anonymously helps with suicidal thoughts

The mail exchange is completely anonymous and all consultants are subject to confidentiality. In this way, those seeking help can be sure that their private thoughts and feelings are safe with the counselors. Young people aged 16 to 25 can be trained as volunteer mail advisors. They are supported by social workers when writing e-mails.

Life crises: trigger for suicidal thoughts

Hannah was also once in a serious life crisis and did not know how to proceed. When she was 15 years old, she was diagnosed with the intestinal disease "Crohn's disease". That had thrown her completely off track at the time. Now she has found a way to deal with it. Therefore, she wants to encourage others and not leave them alone with their suicidal thoughts.

After the diagnosis, I didn't know what to do next. So I can put myself in the shoes of those at risk of suicide very well.

Men are more likely to commit suicide

It happens way too often. Every year around 10,000 people in Germany take their own lives. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-25 year olds. The attempt rate is difficult to determine, but according to the "Arbeitskreis Leben" it is 10 to 15 times higher. Men are about three times more likely to commit suicide than women. On the other hand, the suicide attempt rate is higher among women.

There are reasons for suicidal thoughts: often a long chain of disappointments, humiliations and failed attempts to solve the problem. It is relieving to openly express the suicidal thoughts or fantasies.
