Which is the worst airline to fly
The most unsafe airlines of the year
The Airline Safety Ranking 2018
JACDEC's 2018 safety ranking has rated the 100 busiest airlines in the world based on their safety. The safety of the individual airlines is calculated based on the number of incidents and total losses per flight kilometer. Since all incidents of the past 30 years are included in the ranking statistics, some airlines are also doing poorly because of serious accidents that are far in the past.
In our list, we show you which twelve airlines are at the bottom of the ranking for 2018.
Rank 12: Korean Air (South Korea)
In 1987, North Korean agents dropped a bomb in the passenger cabin of Korean Air Flight 858, killing 115 people. But eight crashes in the past 30 years are not only caused by terrorist attacks. The last Korean Air crash was 17 years ago. This puts KOREAN AIR in 12th place among the most unsafe airlines.
11th place: Turkish Airlines (Turkey)
The largest Turkish airline has made headlines again and again in recent years: the last time a Boeing 737-800 crashed on February 25, 2009 when approaching Schiphol Airport and broke into three parts. Of the 134 people on board, nine were killed. Turkish Airlines has had a total of seven plane crashes in the past 30 years. This puts the airline in 11th place among the most unsafe airlines.
Rank 10: Copa Airlines (Panama)
The last major accident at Copa Airlines was more than twenty years ago. On June 6, 1992, a Boeing 737-200 of the Panamanian airline crashed after an instrument failure in the east of Panama. All 47 occupants were killed in the plane crash. Another major incident occurred on October 21, 2013, when 110 flights were canceled due to a system failure.
9th place: GOL Transportes Aéreos (Brazil)
The Brazilian low-cost airline GOL Transportes Aéreos was only founded in 2001, but the airline had already suffered a bad misfortune in the company's history.
In 2006, a Boeing 737-800EH crashed over the Amazon after colliding with a second aircraft. All 148 passengers and the six-person crew on board died. This event places GOL Transportes Aéreos in 9th place among the most unsafe airlines in the world.
8th place: Saudia (Saudi Arabia)
While the regional competitors Etihad Airways and Emirates are at the top of the JACDEC safety ranking, Saudia has to be content with one of the lowest places. A river crash on November 12, 1996, which killed a total of 439 people, still results in a negative placement in the ranking.
And the Boeing 767-300 HS-BKE, which had to make an emergency landing in Medina on January 5, 2014 due to landing gear problems, also had a negative impact on the airline's safety statistics. During the subsequent evacuation of the aircraft, 29 of the 299 passengers were injured.
7th place: TAM Airlines (Brazil)
The Brazilian airline TAM Airlines is also well behind in the safety ranking of the 100 largest airlines in the world. The reason for this is an accident in which an Airbus A320 crashed on July 17, 2007 while approaching São Paulo-Congonhas Airport, killing 199 people.
6th place: Malaysia Airlines (Malaysia)
Two harrowing aircraft accidents in 2014 caused Malaysia Airlines to fall low in its safety ranking. First, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared from air traffic control surveillance on March 8, 2014. To date, the plane has not been found.
This incident was the worst accident at Malaysia Airlines to date, before Malaysia Airlines flight 17 crashed over the contested area of Ukraine just under four months later and cost even more lives. An anti-aircraft missile had shot down the plane.
As a result of these two catastrophes, Malaysia Airlines ranks 6th among the most unsafe airlines in the world.
5th place: Garuda Indonesia (Indonesia)
The Indonesian airline Garuda Indonesia has been involved in six serious accidents with a total of 282 fatalities over the past 30 years. The last major catastrophe occurred in 2007 when an aircraft shot over the end of the runway while landing on the island of Java and went up in flames. 21 people were killed in the accident.
4th place: Avianca (Colombia)
The Colombian airline AVIANCA had to record three aircraft losses with a total of 323 fatalities in the past 30 years. The last accident occurred in 1990 when a Boeing 707-321B crashed on January 25 due to lack of fuel.
3rd place: China Airlines (Taiwan)
China Airlines comes in third in the ranking of the most unsafe airlines in the world. The reason for this poor ranking is a long list of many incidents. The last major occurred on May 25, 2002, when a Boeing 747 of the Taiwanese airline broke apart during a flight due to material fatigue.
2nd place: Lion Air (Indonesia)
The Indonesian airline LION Air remains in second place among the most unsafe airlines in the world. It owes this ranking to the seven aircraft losses and the striking number of take-off and landing incidents that the airline has recorded in its company's history.
1st place: Vietnam Airlines (Vietnam)
The sad leader in the ranking of the world's most unsafe airlines remains unchanged: Vietnam Airlines. In the past 30 years, a total of 171 people were killed in five flight disasters. In the last major accident with 65 fatalities, a Tupolev Tu-134 crashed while approaching Phnom Penh Airport.
