Origin:

According to J. R. R. Tolkien, the word can be interpreted as a general Germanic name for a person who we can take to be a Celtic speaker. The word appears in Old High German singular "walh" (plural "walha"), the affiliation adjective Old High German "walhisk", Old English as "wilisc" (= foreign, non-English, Kymrisch), in Old Norse as "valskr", "valir" for " Gauls, French ”. It should be derived from a hypothetical - and therefore in etymological usage marked with «*» - proto-European form like "* walhiska".
