Who shouldn't wear a diamond

Can diamonds break?

"What to do if the stone is damaged"

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend! But not only women love them. The "invincible", which means the ancient Greek word "diamond", is worn on countless ring fingers. As the name suggests, this gemstone is extremely stable and almost indestructible. But a diamond can actually break. In the following article you will find out why the hardest stones in the world can be damaged more easily than you might think, how you can prevent this and what to do if the stone is damaged anyway.

A special stone with outstanding properties

The extraordinary gemstones are made of pure carbon. The stone is created deep under the earth, where there is great pressure and great heat. It takes a very long time to form; it takes millions of years for the carbon atoms to join together to form a solid crystal lattice. Through volcanic eruptions, the rough diamonds come to the surface, where, with a lot of luck, they can be found. Normally you have to look for these extraordinary and hard stones deep underground. On the Mohs scale, which determines the hardness of rock, the “indomitable” is the undisputed top.

In addition to being used in engagement rings and other jewelry, these stones with their incomparable hardness are also used in industry. The "invincible" lives up to its name, because even marble, granite and other stones can be cut by it without further ado. The gemstones have a unique, symmetrical atomic bond. This crystal structure ensures the hardness and must also be taken into account when grinding. A stone cannot be ground in any direction.

The grinding process takes several hours and is precise work with millimeter precision. The diamonds only get their unique sparkle with the right facet cut. Incidentally, the cut on the gemstone can only be done with another stone of its type. After a diamond has been cut and given its typical shape, it is checked for purity, brilliance and weight. Weight is defined in carats, with 0.2 grams corresponding to one carat. The carat number is also decisive for the value of the stones.

How can the "invincible" break at all?

In general, the higher the hardness of the stone, the lower the impact resistance. Diamonds are fissile, so a stone can break if it falls on the ground at an awkward angle. Of course, it can also happen that diamond rings break if you hit a hard object with them. Scratches can also occur if they are kept in a jewelry box with their kind. Aggressive chemicals such as chlorine can also damage the ring.

Wear caution - this will prevent damage to your jewelry

Basically, you should put the diamond ring aside when performing manual work. This prevents the socket from getting stuck somewhere or accidentally hitting a hard object with the "invincible". It is also better to take the engagement ring off when working with chemicals. The same applies to necklaces, bracelets and earrings, especially not to be worn when exercising. Even when cleaning, the setting and stone can possibly be broken by the chemicals, so you should take off the jewelry here, as well as on a day at the beach, because the small grains of sand cause contamination and can cause scratches.

Several rings with diamonds should not be kept in the same jewelry box, as there is too great a risk that the jewelry pieces will scratch when they come into contact with one another. Most of all, the gemstones would like to be softly embedded and stored in their original box. It is clear that such a valuable gemstone should be treated with care - according to its value.

First aid for the diamond jewelry

If the diamond has been damaged, the first route should be to the jeweler from whom you bought it. Depending on the size of the damage, the stone can be sharpened so that the damaged area is no longer noticeable. Even if the shine is missing, the jeweler has the necessary tools to make the jewelry shine again. If the damage can no longer be repaired, there is often the option of replacing the gemstone at the jeweler.

New shine for the matt gemstone

In addition to the possibility of a diamond breaking, it can also lose its shine. This is quite normal in everyday life and usually has a harmless cause, such as grease from the skin and creams or other deposits such as dust. In order to make the diamond ring shine again, you should never use acids or other chemicals. Unfortunately, many tips on the Internet are rather harmful for the little piece of jewelry.

A little ammonia in lukewarm water is enough here. The jewelry should soak in the solution for about 10 minutes and then carefully cleaned with a soft toothbrush. It is then advisable to dry the piece of jewelry with a lint-free, soft cloth. Sometimes warm water with soap and a little salt helps to make the little "invincible" shine again.
