Why is Indonesia developing so fast these days

Indonesia today: what is the situation?

Political stability under construction

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, known as "Jokowi", came to power on Monday, October 20, 2014. The 53-year-old from a poor background rock fan provides one Marks a turning point in the political landscape of Indonesia. Indeed, in less than 10 years, he has fought his way onto the political stage, betting on his popularity as the "man of the people". He is the first head of state with no personal or political relationship with General Suharto, who was the country's dictator for 3 decades. Even if all of Indonesia is understandably euphoric, there is still a lot to do before democracy is consolidated across the country.

The case of Papua

Currently is the relationship between Papua and the Indonesian army is a sensitive issue. A peaceful demonstration resulted in the deaths of 5 people. The people who live in Papua denounce that they are treated like "second class citizens".

Certain freedoms are still being trampled on. French journalists were recently arrested for trying to make a report on Papua, even though they did not have permission to do so (these are hard to come by). They were subsequently sentenced but released.

The guerrilla fighting for a free Papua is on the terrorist list of the USA.

What's the future like?

It remains to be seen whether the popular president will also bring about positive changes. His recent alliances with China and his influence in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations strengthen his political supremacy all the more.

His goal is, to expand Indonesia's maritime superiority, a country that lies at the crossroads between Asia and the West. But will this project be thwarted by the rise in sea levels?

Of course, the country will always be able to rely on its natural resources to develop more sustainable tourism. I think one shouldn't hesitate to visit Indonesia.

I will be traveling to the country soon, you can follow my adventures on my blog (May 2015). You can currently find interesting anecdotes there!
