How much do instruction designers earn
Work-at-home job profile: instruction designer
Also known as: an ID; Curriculum Designer or ISD
Industry / occupational field:
Teaching designers work in corporations, governments and nonprofits in the fields of online education, distance learning, e-learning, apprenticeship, etc. In educational institutions, teaching designers work at the K-12, high school, college and adult education levels; College is common, however.
Job description of an instructional designer:
Instructional technicians, in short, use learning principles to develop educational systems and materials. At the center of the tasks of teaching designers are the responsibility to develop the appearance, organization and functionality of learning systems.
Well, what kind of systems, for whom, at what level and how this is done varies greatly between the tasks of lesson design. Many instruction designers work in e-learning and may convert personal teaching materials into online courses. Others can work on developing corporate training. Each hiring organization can define didactic designer jobs slightly differently.
Some of the tasks an instruction designer may perform include:
- Writing the learning objectives and setting the scope of educational projects
- Creating the layout of the teaching material
- Work with subject matter experts to shape the course content and perhaps write that content
- Developing media (audio, visual, interactive) to aid in learning
- Planning and creating assessments to measure whether learning objects are being met
Classroom designers usually have no contact with students. The courses they design are usually delivered by online faculty members.
Type of position:
The positions can be regular employment or for independent contractors or consultants.
Instructional design jobs can often be home-at-home positions, especially when they are contract positions, but many instructional design employment positions can easily transition to teleworking. (Remember that home office jobs are rarely entry-level in instruction design.)
Full-time teaching positions are usually salaried positions. Part-time employment and contractual positions in this area are most likely paid hourly. However, some independent contractors may be paid in the curriculum for an entire project rather than hourly.
Training / experience required:
Just as an instruction designer varies, the path to a career in instruction design is not a one-off path. People come to the teaching profession after being first teachers, writers, editors, media specialists, trainers, etc. This is the kind of job that many learn from them. However, others learn through school.
A bachelor's degree is the minimum educational requirement for an instruction designer. If that degree is in a related field like education or communication, so much the better. However, some employers may look for a Masters in Instructional Design or Instructional Technology.
Without a master's degree, experience in teaching, training, writing, or web technology is usually expected.
Some skills needed or helpful in curriculum planning:
- Basic HTML Understanding
- Graphic design experience
- Experience with learning management systems
- Knowledge of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, PowerPoint and other MS Office software
- Audio and video editing skills
Factors that determine pay for educational designers include level of education and experience, and type of position. Educational designers who work in a business setting can also be paid more than those in a government or nonprofit organization.
The hourly rate for teachers can range from $ 20 to $ 45 an hour or more. Entry-level salaries for those with a bachelor's degree start in the upper $ 40,000 to lower $ 50,000 range.
With more experience and a Masters degree, the job can pay anywhere from $ 60,000 to $ 90,000 or more. *
